Villanova Wildcats Top Lehigh 38-10 in 2019 Football Home Opener

The Villanova Wildcats opened their 2019 home football schedule on Saturday, September 7th at 6 PM when they hosted Lehigh University at Villanova Stadium. The Wildcats were looking to move to 2-0 on the season after opening with a 34-14 road win at Colgate University on August 24th. 8000+ fans were on hand for this one, including several members of Villanova’s Men’s basketball team (pictured in gallery).

Neither team got on the board in the first quarter but after the Mountain Hawk’s Austin Henning kicked a 32 yard FG to open the scoring, Villanova really opened things up in the 2nd quarter, scoring on offense, defense, and in the kicking game.

Wildcats’ QB Daniel Smith hit WR Jaaron Hayek on a 31-yard strike to give Villanova a 7-3 lead in the 2nd quarter. Kicker Drew Kresge next added a 33-yard FG to increase Villanova’s lead to 10-3.

Not wanting to be outshined by the offense, Elijah Trent picked off Lehigh QB Tyler Monaco and returned it 37-yards for a Pick-6. Kresge tacked on the extra point and the Villanova Wildcats rolled into half-time with a 17-3 lead.

The Mountain Hawks scored first in the second half on a 42-yard TD strike from Monaco, to draw within 7 points of Villanova. The Wildcats promptly responded with a 78-yard drive, capped off by a Justin Covington 16-yard scamper for a TD. The lead quickly ballooned from 24-10 to 31-10 when Smith connected with Todd Summers on a 13-yard TD pass.

Not content with their lead, the Villanova Wildcats notched the 4th quarter’s only score, when Smith connected on his third TD pass of the day, capping off an 88-yard drive with the 13-yard strike to Dez Bryant. The Wildcats defense remained stout, holding up the final 38-10 score.

The Villanova Wildcats (2-0) play next Saturday at Bucknell (6 PM) before opening the CAA season on the 21st at Towson (6 PM). Villanova next returns home on September 28th when they host Maine (3:30 PM).
