The Villanova Wildcats hosted the Fordham University Rams on Saturday, September 6th  in their home opener. Last year, Fordham upset Villanova 27 24 early in the season to drop the Wildcats to 0-2. Overall, Villanova entered the game 20-5-3 against Fordham in a series that began in 1897.

The Wildcats, coming off of a heartbreaking double overtime loss at Syracuse on August 29th, were trying to avoid a repeat of last year’s loss to Fordham. Before the game began, all Villanova freshmen had the chance to run out onto the field.

Villanova opened the scoring on a 14 play, 70 yard drive on a 20 yard scamper by John Robertson. True Freshman Steve Weyler kicked the extra point to put the Wildcatsup  7-0 on with 5:55 to go in the first quarter. Fordham came right back, primarily on the strength of a 51 yard pass play from QB Mike Nebrich to wide receiver  Sam Ajala, to make the score 7-3. Fordham’s points came courtesy of a 31 yard field goal by Michael Marando.

At 4:33pm, with 13:49 left in the second quarter, the game was delayed due to lightning in the area. The field was cleared and the stadium was evacuated. The game resumed over an hour later at 5:42pm. Shortly after play resumed, the Wildcats scored on 16 yard pass from Robertson to Austin Medley. Weyler‘s extra point went astray leaving the Wildcats with a 13-3 lead with 10:52 to play in the first half.

The Wildcats next scored on a 9 yard pass from Robertson to his favorite target, Poppy Livers . The extra point was again missed and the score stood at 19-3. On the next possession, Nebrich’s pass was picked off by Linebacker Austin Calitro who returned it 35 yards for a touchdown. Chris Gough converted the extra point and the Wildcats lead grew to 26-3 with 4:51 left in the half. Robertson connected with Livers again with under a minute to play and the Wildcats hit the locker room at half time up 33-3.

The second half was much like the first. Villanova put up an additional 17 points (TD runs from Gary Underwood and Matt Gudzak, field-goal by Gough) while Fordham was able to muster only a lowly field-goal. When all was said and done, Villanova had an impressive 50-6 win under its belt.
