The 14th ranked Villanova Wildcats breezed to a 35-0 shellacking of CAA conference foe, the Rhode Island Rams, at Villanova Stadium on Saturday, October 8.
Villanova dominated Rhode Island from start to finish in picking up its 5th win of the season. The Wildcats scored on their first possession on a 16-yard run by Javon White to culminate a 7 play, 83 yard drive. On its next possession, after again forcing the Rams to punt, Villanova scored on a 36-yard pass from QB Zach Bednarczyk to tight end Ryan Bell. The touchdown catch resulted in Bell’s first career touchdown reception. The Wildcats would score again in the first quarter on a 67-yard career long run by Aaron Forbes. At the end of the first quarter, the score stood at 21-0 in favor of the Wildcats. Villanova’s defense did not allow Rhode Island to pick up a single first down in the opening quarter.
Villanova continued to prey on the Rams in the second quarter. After forcing another four and out, the Wildcats drove 89-yards in 10 plays to score on a Bednarczyk 8-yard toss to Taurus Phillips. The score at the half was Villanova 28 – Rhode Island 0. The Wildcats out-gained the Rams 323 total yards to 44 total yards.
Villanova scored in the third quarter on a 1-yard run up the middle by Matt Gudzak, and Gerard Smith converted the extra point to close out the scoring. Smith was 5 of 5 on extra point attempts. Neither team scored in the 4th quarter as Villanova played many of its bench players.
For the now 5-1, 3-0 (CAA) Wildcats, Aaron Forbes was the leading rusher with 90 yards on 10 carries, and a touchdown. Gudzak added 64 yards and a touchdown on 8 rushes. Javon White chipped in 58 yards on 10 carries and a score. Bednarczyk ran for 59 yards on 8 runs. Corey Russo gained 29 yards on 6 runs. Bednarczyk threw for 133 yards on 8 of 9 attempts and 2 scores. Phillips was Villanova’s leading receiver with 3 catches for 54 yards and a touchdown. Bell had 1 reception for 36 yards and a score. Defensively, Linebacker Austin Calitro led the way with 8 tackles, including a sack. T.J. White had 6 tackles. Matt Rushton snagged an interception.
For the visiting Rams, 1-5 on the season, 0-3 (CAA), T.J. Anderson picked up a net of 33 yards on 8 rushes. The Rams were held to a net of 28 yards rushing for the game. QB Jordan Vazzano was 14 of 30 for 75 net yards passing. He was picked off one time. Harold Cooper was Rhody’s leading pass receiver with 3 catches for 24 yards. Nas Jones had 9 tackles to top the Rams on defense.
Villanova will travel to Richmond next Saturday, October 15 to play the Spiders in a 3:30 PM CAA conference game to be broadcast on Comcast SportsNet. Next Saturday, the Rams will travel to Albany to take on the Great Danes in a CAA match-up.
