Villanova started its 2012- 2013 season by beating the visiting Ravens of Carleton College (Canada) 65-59 in an exhibition game at the Pavilion on Thursday night, November 1st. Villanova started a lineup of Mouphtaou Yarou, JayVaughn Pinkston, James Bell, Darrun Hilliard, and Ryan Arcidiacono. The Wildcats, after trailing Carleton 11-5, went on a 16-4 run to go up 21-15. Nova did not relinquish the lead from that point on, taking a 36-33 margin into the half. Yarou paced the Wildcats in the opening half with a dozen points and 7 rebounds. Hilliard and Tony Chennault each added 7 points.
The Wildcats outscored the visitors 29-26 in the second half. Yarou finished with a double-double, 21 points and 12 rebounds. Hilliard contributed 15 points. Chennault finished with 8 points. Villanova had a 48-41 rebounding margin.
For the game, Villanova’s shooting was a little off. The Wildcats shot 18 for 57 (31.6 %), including 3 for 20 on three point shots (15%). Nova hit 26 of 38 foul shots (68.4%).
For Carleton, Phillip Scrubb scored a game high 32 points. “(Scrubbs) is a talented guy,” stated Villanova coach Jay Wright. “We knew what he was capable of and he’s definitely someone who could be effective in the Big East.”
Former Villanova point guard Mike Nardi, was at the game. Also taking in the game was high school star Austin Colbert, who is on an official visit to Villanova.
Villanova ‘s next game is on November 9th (7pm) at the Pavilion against the University of the District of Columbia.
