Villanova took on the Marist Red Foxes tonight in the first of four games it will play in the Dick’s Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off. The game was televised by ESPNU as part of ESPN’s third annual College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon. The 1-0 Wildcats opened their season last Friday with a 68-52 win over Bucknell.
For Marist, the game against 6th ranked Villanova was their first of the season. Last year Marist, coached by Chuck Martin, won only one game the entire season.

Villanova went on a 19-1 run to take a 24-9 lead in the first half. During the Wildcat’s run, Marist went 16 straight possessions without a field goal.
Maurice Sutton with the Dunk
Villanova led at the half 36-25, with major contributions from Wayns and Cheek.
After Marist cut Villanova’s lead to 8 (38-30) four minutes into the second half, the Cats kicked it up several notches and routed the Red Foxes 84-47. The Cats run of twelve straight points effectively put the game out-of-reach for Marist. The lead mushroomed as Villanova, who shot poorly in the first half, began to find their range.
