Villanova took on the Marist Red Foxes tonight in the first of four games it will play in the Dick’s Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off. The game was televised by ESPNU as part of ESPN’s third annual College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon. The 1-0 Wildcats opened their season last Friday with a 68-52 win over Bucknell.
For Marist, the game against 6th ranked Villanova was their first of the season. Last year Marist, coached by Chuck Martin, won only one game the entire season.
Villanova went on a 19-1 run to take a 24-9 lead in the first half. During the Wildcat’s run, Marist went 16 straight possessions without a field goal.
Villanova led at the half 36-25, with major contributions from Wayns and Cheek.
After Marist cut Villanova’s lead to 8 (38-30) four minutes into the second half, the Cats kicked it up several notches and routed the Red Foxes 84-47. The Cats run of twelve straight points effectively put the game out-of-reach for Marist. The lead mushroomed as Villanova, who shot poorly in the first half, began to find their range.
Five Villanova players scored in double figures led by Maalik Wayns with 17 points (along with 7 rebounds, 4 assists, & only one turnover). Dominic Cheek tallied 15 points, Maurice Sutton, who was very active, finished with 13 points and a game high 9 rebounds, Corey Fisher, who had a poor shooting night, contributed 10 points and 7 assists, and Mouphtaou Yarou added 10 points. Jay Bowie, who was the only player for Marist to score in double figures, had 12 first half points. He only scored two more after intermission.
Villanova extended its on-campus winning streak to 39 games with the win over Marist. Villanova next takes on Boston University, coached by ex-Villanova Assistant Coach Pat Chambers, who bested George Washington University in the second game of the double header tonight by a score of 76-67. BU was led by John Holland who scored 28 points, and Jake O’Brien who had a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
The game will take place at the Pavilion Wednesday night at 8 p.m.
In other local action, LaSalle lost at Baylor 74-64, and St. Joe’s lost at Penn State.
