Villanova drops a heartbreaking Homecoming match to Stony Brook

October 26, 2019 – VILLANOVA, PA — Villanova played host to the Stony Brook Seawolves in front of a homecoming crowd, but crushingly let a victory slip through their fingers. Nova dominated the first half, leading 28-13, but as the rain became steadier in the second half, the Seawolves clawed back to win on a 22-yard field goal with no time left on the clock.

Following a blocked Villanova punt, Stony Brook started the scoring with a 15-yard run by QB Tyquell Fields. But the Wildcats then drove 99 yards, capped off by a 68-yard TD trick-play with a pass from WR Jaaron Hayek back to QB Daniel Smith. Both defenses kicked in and the quarter ended tied 7-7.

Nova turned up the offense in the 2nd quarter. Running back TD Ayo-Durojaiye scored on a 24-yard run. On their next possession, Smith connected with Hayek for a 21-yard TD pass. Later Ayo-Durojaiye passed to WR Changa Hodge for a 24-yard touchdown play. Stony Brook managed only a field goal all quarter, thanks in part to an interception by Villanova’s Jaquan Amos.

The tide slowly turned in the second half, with a field goal and TD by Stony Brook. Villanova was held scoreless the rest of the 3rd quarter, after a missed field goal and a failed 4th down conversion attempt.

In the 4th quarter, the Wildcats celebrated an 80-yard drive with a TD run by DeeWil Barlee. The Seawolves marched back with a 73-yard drive and TD pass from Fields to Shawn Harris. Stony Brook continued the scoring with a TD run by Fields, but a 2-point conversion attempt failed leaving Nova in the lead 35-33 with only 1:26 left. But Nova could not run out the clock, and with only 21 seconds remaining, Stony Brook drove the field and kicked a game-winning 22-yard field goal with no time left on the clock.
