Last night at the Theatre of the Living Arts (TLA) on South Street, heavy metal rockers “The Sword”, from Austin, TX, rocked Philadelphia with heavy guitar riff after heavy guitar riff.
The Sword, comprised of members J. D. Cronise, Kyle Shutt, and Bryan Richie, has toured with the likes of Metallica and Ozzy Osbourne. They released their third album “Warp Riders” earlier this year. They were already touring in support of the album when the band split from their drummer and were forced to postpone the remainder of their shows. Back in Austin, they teamed up with drummer Kevin Fender, and got right back out of the road.
Warp Riders, like The Sword’s live show, is not for the faint of heart, but for heavy metal fans it is pure gold.
The Sword self produced their first two albums “Age of Winters” (2006) & “God’s of Earth” (2008) but brought in an outside producer for the first time on Warp Riders. The result is hardcore metal anthems like “Lawless Lands” and “Night City”.
After taking the stage to a roar of cheers from the crowd, The Sword, who look every bit like a heavy metal outfit, let the fans have it. It was freezing cold outside but plenty of heat was generated inside the TLA from the hot, molten metal on stage. Independent Philly certainly got a crash course in headbanging 101.
