Temple vs. USF: Big Win For Owls in Return to Big East

Published On October 8, 2012 | Sports

Temple was riding a two game losing streak coming into their home game on Saturday, October 6th at Lincoln Financial Field. Looking to end the skid and get back to .500, they hosted the South Florida Bulls in their first Big East contest since leaving the MAC to rejoin the conference earlier this year.

The weather was perfect at kick-off and a loyal crowd of Owls fans were on hand to cheer the team on.

South Florida started the 2012 season with back-to-back wins but had lost three straight games coming into the match-up with Temple.

Temple QB Chris Coyer got Temple on the board early, scoring on a 24 yard touchdown run on the Owl’s first possession (he also passed for one TD on the day).

The action was offensive in nature with both teams scoring on multiple drives. As the fourth quarter rolled around, Temple found themselves ahead by a slight margin with the Bulls charging down the field, poised to take the lead.

In a game dominated by offense, it was back to back key defensive plays that sealed the game in the final 90 seconds. With 1:30 left to play, USF had a critical 3rd and 1 at the Temple 23 yard line. True freshman linebacker Tyler Matakevich, tackledĀ Demetri Murray for a 5 yard loss which forced the USF PKĀ Maikon Bonani to attempt a 45 yard FG on 4th down.

The kick was blocked by Marcus Green, and advanced to the USF 35 yard line by Anthony Robey.

Owls RB Montel Harris, who already had one TD and 98 yards rushing on the day, exploded on the very next play for a 35 yard TD run to seal the Temple victory.

It was a gritty hard fought victory for the Owls, who went to 2-2 with the victory (1-0 Big East), and a crushing defeat for the Bulls who dropped to 2-4 (0-2 Big East). USF RB Lindsey Lamar was the Bulls best weapon on Saturday, scoring two TD’s (one on the ground, one through the air).
