The Temple University Owls hosted Rice University in their 2012-13 home opener at the Liacouras Center on Saturday, November 17th (8pm).

After leading by just three points at the half, Temple pulled away in the second half to win the game by a 14 point margin. This was somewhat surprising considering that Temple hit just 1 of 10 three-point attempts in the second half. However, the Owls were able to balance out their dismal shooting from behind the arc by sinking 16 of 17 free-throws after intermission.

The Owls were led by Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson who paced Temple’s scoring with 18 points. Khalif Wyatt added 17 points and Anthony Lee and Scootie Randall both chipped in 16. Randall had a double-double, pulling down 12 rebounds to go with his 16 points.

Rice, who dropped to 1-2 with the loss, was led by Tamir Jackson’s double-double, 17 points and 12 rebounds. Rice had two other players score in double figures, Julian DeBose with 15 points, and Keith Washington with 12.

Temple dominated the boards pulled down 40 to Rice’s 26 (including 16 offensive rebounds to just 3 for Rice). Temple had twice as many assists (16) than turnovers (8) while Rice had more than double the amount of turnovers (13) to assists (6).

Temple, now 2-0, next hosts Delaware at 2pm on November 25th.
