After opening the 2016 MLS season with a road loss, followed by a road win, the Philadelphia Union played their first home game of the season at Talen Energy Stadium (formerly PPL Park) on Sunday, March 20th.

CJ Sapong got things started for the Union on Sunday, scoring in the 18th minute over goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth to put Philly up 1-0 over the New England Revolution. Fifteen minutes later, Sapong again beat Shuttleworth to extend the Union’s lead to 2-0. Two minutes later, New England’s Lee Nguyen saw his free kick bounce off not one, but both Philadelphia goal posts, denying him a goal. The Union rolled into half-time still leading 2-0.

While Shuttleworth did manage to become just the fourth goalie in MLS history to block two penalty kicks in the same game, it will be the goals he did allow that will be remembered. In the 91st minute (stoppage time), Philadelphia’s Sebastian Le Toux found the back of the net and put the Union up by 3. The 3-0 score would hold, giving Philadelphia a convincing victory in their home opener and goalkeeper Andre Blake a shut out.

With back to back wins (following their season opening loss) the Union’s 6 points are good for the most in the Eastern Conference. Although it is very early in the 2016 season, it’s very nice to see Philly off to a hot start.
