Philadelphia Union Top NYCFC 2-1 For First Win of 2015
The Philadelphia Union secured their first win of the season on Saturday, April 11th at PPL Park. The Union entered the game with a record of 0-3-2, three points behind opponent NYCFC (who entered the game at 1-1-2).
The sold-out crowd at PPL Park played witness to a stellar performance by the home team. The Union game out of the gate looking sharp, barely missing on a few scoring attempts in the early going. In the 27th minute, Zach Pfeffer beat NYC goalkeeper Josh Saunders to put Philadelphia up 1-0. The goal was assisted by Sebastian Le Toux and 18 year old mid-fielder Eric Ayuk Mbu. The Union took the 1-0 into the locker room at half time.
Philadelphia’s goalkeeper John McCarthy, who was making his MLS debut, would have loved a shut out in his first game in goal but it was not to be. In the 55th minute, NYCFC’s David Villa found the back of the net to knot the score at 1-1. The Union had a few chances to retake the lead but couldn’t convert.
Stoppage time proved to be the difference. Two minutes into extra time, Vincent Nogueira beat Saunders from about 12 yards out. The decisive goal netted the Union three points and a huge roar of cheers from the Sons of Ben and the rest of the Philly faithful. It was the most #Doop worthy moment to date for the Union this season.
The two teams will meet again on April 16th in a 7pm match at Yankee Stadium in New York.
