Philadelphia Union Dropped 2-0 By Orlando City Soccer Club

Making a final push to the playoffs, the Philadelphia Union fell short on Sunday, October 16th when they hosted Orlando City Soccer Club at Talen Energy Stadium. In front of 18,007 fans, the Union mounted a few legit scoring chances but were not able to capitalize and convert them into goals.

Both clubs had their moments on offense in the first half of play. In the 31st minute, Fabian Herbers took a pass from Tranquillo Barnetta but his shot sailed over the cross bar. In the 42nd minute, Kaka had a chance at scoring for Orlando City but some nifty defensive play by defender Ken Tribbett and GK Andre Blake thwarted his advance.

After the break, in the 59th minute, Orlando City’s Carlos Rivas stole the ball from Fabinho, and beat Blake to put the Union in a 0-1 hole. The score remained 1-0 until stoppage time when Julio Baptista’s shot was partially deflected by Blake but trickled into the net to ice the game.

Despite the 2-0 loss, the Union still find themselves in the playoff hunt and can secure a spot with a win or a draw against the New York Red Bulls in their final game on the season, next weekend at Talen Energy Stadium. If Philadelphia loses that game, they will also need a loss from New England to make it to the post-season.
