Perfume Genius Brings Stillness and a Deeply Personal Set to First Unitarian Church

April 01, 2026 – From the moment Perfume Genius took the stage at Philly’s First Unitarian Church, he commanded the room in a way few artists can. Backed by a second keyboard, the stripped-down setup kept the focus on his voice, moving effortlessly through the higher register before dropping down when needed. The performance felt deeply personal, unfolding like pieces of his own life rather than a traditional set, with the room settling into a quiet that never broke.

His voice is astonishing, mostly in the higher register but occasionally dropping down, leaving another mark on his audience at Philly’s First Unitarian Church. On songs like “In a Row,” “It’s a Mirror,” and “No Front Teeth” from his latest release, Glory, the restraint carried the songs—never pushed, just held in place. He hits the high notes and pulls it back just as easily, a voice that felt pure and effortless, keeping the room completely quiet and locked in.

He knew exactly how to work the stage and his audience, his performance adding a strength that goes beyond his recordings. Every moment felt intentional, nothing wasted or overplayed. He turned the venue into a mesmerizing mixture of his life’s diary, keeping the room quiet and locked in until the very end.
