February 18, 2020 – VILLANOVA — The Villanova mens lacrosse team pulled off the upset win over #4 Maryland in front of their home fans. In a close game throughout, this was only the second time the Wildcats beat the Terrapins in program history – the last being at Maryland in 2017.
Nova set the tone right from the opening face-off, and scored the first three goals against a stunned Terp squad. Corey McManus (#14), Patrick Daly (#66) and Connor Kirst (#34) scored for the Wildcats, and later McManus scored again. But the Terps scored 4 times as well in the 1st quarter, with 2 goals each from Logan Wisnauskus (#12) and Jared Bernhardt (#1).
In the second quarter, Nova started the scoring with a man-up goal from Keegan Khan (#39), and traded goals with the Terps to go into halftime with a 7-6 lead. Defenseman Patrick Kennedy (#46) sprinted the entire field for an unassisted goal, and McManus added another before half.
In the 3rd, Villanova again came off the break strong, with the first goal from Kirst. Maryland would add 2 goals while Nova netted 2 additional scores, one from Daly and another from Kirst.
Nova kicked off the 4th quarter like they started the game, with 3 straight goals, this time from Colin Crowley (#1), Eric Overbay (#19), and Daly. That proved enough to win, even though Maryland scored 4 times but ran out of time as twilight came with a light rain.
Villanova outshot Maryland 45-38, and their goalie, Will Vitton (#30), was spectacular with 14 saves behind a strong defense. Next up for Nova is Hofstra on the road Saturday Feb. 22 at 2pm.
