June 05, 2026 – Indie alt-rock icons Modest Mouse played to a sold out crowd at Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, NJ on Friday night. The venue was packed shoulder-to-shoulder from the barricade to the back wall as fans gathered to celebrate the release of the band’s eighth studio album, An Eraser and a Maze, their first new album in five years.

Modest Mouse opened their set with “March Into the Sea.” Founding vocalist and guitarist Isaac Brock stood center stage, belting out the lyrics through a bullhorn. A big, stormy opener, the song felt like walking straight into chaos and not really knowing where things were going to end up. Fans pressed against the barricade behind me were screaming the chorus.
The set quickly jumped into “Picking Dragon’s Pockets” from An Eraser and a Maze. This one had that newer Modest Mouse feel — strange, sharp, and restless. Another song from the new album finished up the opening trio. “Life’s a Dream” is a slow, reflective ballad and one of the more thoughtful songs from the new record, giving the audience an early taste of the band’s latest material.
While the band has experienced numerous lineup changes throughout the years, the driving force behind Modest Mouse has remained the same. For more than three decades, Isaac Brock’s staccato vocals, lopsided melodies, and perplexing lyrics have been the cornerstones of the band’s sound and helped build one of the most loyal fan bases in indie rock.
At Starland Ballroom, Modest Mouse performed a career-spanning set drawing from seven of the band’s eight studio albums. Fan favorites included “3rd Planet,” “Tiny Cities Made of Ashes,” and “Dashboard,” with the sold-out crowd singing along to nearly every word.
The encore featured a mix of newer material and longtime fan favorites. “Float On” had the sold-out crowd singing every word, while “Breakthrough” took fans back to the band’s earliest days. Modest Mouse closed out the night with a frantic performance of “Shit Luck,” sending the packed crowd home on a high note.
It all added up with Modest Mouse doing what they have done for more than 30 years performing songs that don’t sound quite like anybody else. Local Philly fans will have the opportunity to see Modest Mouse for themselves when they perform at The Fillmore Philadelphia on August 19th.
