On a rainy Monday night in Philadelphia, Independent Philly was at the Merriam Theatre on Broad Street as UK darlings “The XX” took the stage in front of an excited crowd.

Brittish Beats

Opening Act

We’d seen these Brit “kids” do their thing at Coachella in April, but at their current ripe old age of 21, they added a whole new element to their light show in this indoor venue.

They ran thought their catalog of hits with songs like “Islands”, “VCR”, “Heart Skipped a Beat”, “Shelter”, & “Crystalized”. They even surprised the crowd with a cover of the Robin S. song “Show Me Love” (which we thought they would transition into their cover of Florence + The Machine’s “You’ve Got the Love”. Alas, they did not).

The show opened with the bands “War Paint” and “Zola Jesus” before The XX took the stage just after 10 PM.

The band left stage at the end of their set and did not return for an encore. For die-hard The XX fans, this was expected but still somewhat disappointing. To truly be hardcore (XXX) The XX should consider playing an extra song or two at the end of their show.

In the meantime, we’re more than happy with the soft-core version.
