Matt & Kim: High Temps & High Energy at Trocadero

The legendary Trocadero Theater played host to a sold-out crowd last night as Matt & Kim rolled into Philadelphia. Fans flocked inside from the sweltering Philadelphia heat and humidity to witness the drum & keyboard playing Brooklyn duo.

Their high-energy brand of pop-electronica has garnered them a cult-like following and this was clearly evident last night. It was actually more hot & sticky inside the Troc than it was on the street outside. The place was jammed with fans, both on the lower level and in the second floor balcony.

Matt & Kim took the stage shortly after 9pm and thanked fans for sweating it out with them. Then, the fun began.

If you’ve never witnessed a live Matt & Kim show then you can’t possibly know what you’re missing. We’ll attempt to tell you.

With Kim on drums and Matt on keyboards (and 99% of vocals) these two play the first note to the last with giant smiles on their faces. They tell stories, they drink beer on stage, they stand up and jump around the stage (Kim generally crowd surfs as well), they engage their fans (even pointing out specific fans that they noticed were dancing the entire show or bringing great energy to the room), and last night, they even brought balloons that they tossed into the crowd so that they could be blown up and bounced around the room.

On top of the high-energy of Matt & Kim, their music itself is extremely up-tempo. They effortlessly blend their own hit songs with covers of popular hip-hop and electronica tracks.

Matt encouraged fans to cheer for the Phillies mid-way through the show, showered overheated fans with bottled water, and complimented Kim on her breasts (which earned him a fist-bump). Kim mentioned several times that she normally only drinks Budweiser but the Troc only had Yuengling (which she was quickly discovering was more potent than Bud) and so it was going to be a very fun night.

Their chemistry with each other and with their fans is entirely too real to be faked; these two love what they do and that passion explodes from the stage and envelops their fans.

The fans were crazy last night! As much as Matt & Kim love being on stage, their fans love being in the audience. Matt & Kim first started playing at the Church, moved to the bigger Starlight Ballroom, and when that wasn’t big enough, they sold out the Trocadero. Before we know it they’ll be selling out even larger venues.

Sometimes covering a show feels like work, and sometimes it makes you feel like you have the greatest job in the world. Thankfully, Matt & Kim always make us feel like winners. They’ll be back in town this fall with My Chemical Romance and Blink 182. We can’t wait.
