Maren Morris and her ‘GIRL the World Tour’ 2019 rolled into The Met on Saturday, September 7th, 2019. This was her second time playing Philly in the past five months as she also appeared at The Fillmore this past April. Clearly, Philly fans were happy to soak up a double dose of Maren Morris as both shows were very well attended.
Saturday’s show kicked off with an opening set from Hailey Whitters, a vocalist with whom we were unfamiliar before the show and while she was talented, she was somewhat forgettable as compared to the later performers.
Kassi Ashton was up next and gave us something we have never seen before: a belly dancing country singer. If country music had a little sister with a bit of a wild streak, it would be Kassi Ashton. She commanded the ears and eyes of all in attendance and was as captivating with her movements as she was with her voice.
By the time Maren Morris took the stage, the Met was brimming with palpable anticipation. Morris hit the ground running, opening with her hit, ‘Girl’. Her twenty-one song set had a little something for everyone but our favorite parts came, you guessed it, in the middle. For song #12, Morris played her mainstream cross-over hit (with Zedd), ‘The Middle’. Two songs later she brought both support acts back on stage with her to do a cover of the Cardigan’s ‘Lovefool’, followed immediately by ‘Crowded Table’, a song from her new female supergroup, The Highwomen.
The night ended on a soulful version of ‘My Church’ which had everyone in attendance clapping along and singing their collective hearts out. There is clearly a hunger for country music here in the City of Brotherly Love (and Sisterly Affection) as is evidenced by Brandi Carlisle, Maren Morris, and Kasey Musgraves all having packed shows in the same week (with the latter two both on their second city appearance in the past year).
