Birth & death are the circle of life. This phenomenon was front and center last night at the Blockley Pourhouse in West Philly where Japanese-American rapper, Lyrics Born, absolutely killed it.
The night opened with support from local rapper LTC. This guy is really quite good. His track “I’ll Be Home Soon Friend” is certainly worth a listen (in our case we’ve already listened to it several times). We had a chance to speak with him after the show and definitely think he’s someone to keep an eye on.
The D.J. and drums duo known as Skins & Needles took the stage around 10pm. Needles spins well-known tracks and Skins drums on top of them.
With no break in between, Lyrics Born joined them on-stage about 30 minutes into their set and the main part of the show began. If you’ve never heard Lyrics Born before, and you’re a hip-hop fan, then shame on you. This guy has been around since the mid-90’s and has collaborated with many artists including Lateef, Jurrasic 5, Blackalicious, Galactic, DJ Shadow, Z-Trip, and Chali 2na.
The man is a wordsmith, his baritone voice spits out complex rhythmic patterns with ease. He is a high energy performer who moves around the stage, speaks directly to the fans, and free-styles like he was born to do it. While he had Skins, Needles, and a amazingly talented back-up vocalist with him on stage, his manager told us that the show is even better when a live guitarist and bass player join the mix. We’d love to see that the next time around.
As the tour continues down the east coast, we strongly suggest trying to catch him in action.
