Growing Up With The Shakedown, Getting Down With Mark Farina & Doc Martin

One of our favorite parties in Philadelphia over the past decade are the Shakedown events thrown by Worship Recordings. Started way back in 2002 the monthly Shakedown events quickly grew in popularity, eventually showcasing some of the best and brightest DJs that house music has to offer.

So what do you do when your event turns eleven years old? You throw a birthday party. That’s exactly what the guys from Worship Recordings did on Saturday, March 9th at the Trocadero.

The Shakedown 11 year anniversary party featured music from the Worship Recordings crew upstairs with sets by DJ Dennis, Willyum, Carl Michaels, and Rob Paine.

Downstairs it was five hours of bliss from two members of house music royalty, Mark Farina from 9pm-12am, followed by two hours with Doc Martin on the decks.

We showed up right as the night began, as we didn’t want to miss a minute of Mark Farina. The house master opened the evening with some Mushroom Jazz before quickly transitioning into some extra funky, uptempo selections. While the crowd was a little sparse at the beginning of his set, it soon filled in nicely as house-heads from across the city (and from out of town) showed up to get their Farina fix.

There seemed to be some hiccups with the sound system on the main floor but no minor glitches can stop Mark Farina.

Upstairs in the balcony, a nice sized crowd also formed to support the local guys as they celebrated the success of The Shakedown by breaking it down on the dance floor.

The Shakedown attracts an older, more sophisticated crowd of house music fans and as such, many danced themselves out by about 1am (or had to head home to relieve babysitters). Those who stayed for Doc Martin’s entire set were treated to another 2 hours of stellar track selection.

Those who were feeling especially saucy kept the party going after 2am and headed to the after party where the Worship Recordings crew and Mark Farina dropped even more killer tunes for the Shakedown faithful.

We can’t wait to see what the Shakedown has in store for the rest of 2013!

Speaking of birthdays, house music fans will want to head to The Barbary on Saturday, April 13th for the 4th annual Winkdown birthday bash that will feature a four hour set by Josh Wink!
