Flyers kick off the preseason vs NY Islanders

September 16, 2019 – PHILADELPHIA — Hard to believe that we are kicking off the 2019-20 NHL season on an 85 degree day. The Flyers lost to the NY Islanders 3-1 in a very entertaining preseason game at the beautifully renovated Wells Fargo Center.

New massive scoreboard and screens

After an early Islander goal, the ever-reliable James van Riemsdyk scored the only Flyers goal to tie the game in the 2nd period. In goal for the Flyers was Brian Elliott and Alex Lyon.

There were a lot of new faces for the Flyers – some we won’t see during the regular season – but a very promising group is coming up. And of course the veterans and new acquisitions made their presence felt, including 6’5” Kevin Hayes, Shayne Gostisbehere, and Jakub Voracek.

This did not feel like a preseason game. The crowd enjoyed the numerous scoring opportunities and physical play, including a brawl between Flyer’s Chris Stewart and NY’s Kyle Burroughs. Just some good old-time hockey. The teams will get an immediate next-day rematch in NY – should be exciting!
