Flyers Fall Short in Season Opener Comeback

Photos and story by Rick Pettine

October 15, 2021 – Philadelphia, PA — Did they add 5,000 more seats to the Wells Fargo Center over the past year, or was the energized crowd just overly excited to be back in full force cheering on their Flyers? Or maybe it was the fact that the home opener was also the season opener. Either way the fans were loud and hyped. (By the way, they did not add more seats!)

The home base had plenty to cheer about in the first period, with the Flyers dominating the Vancouver Canucks and leading 1-0 by the end of the period. But that quickly changed in the second and most of the third period as the Canucks led 4-2 with just over 3 mins in regulation.

And then, the Flyers’ Travis Konecny capitalized on a penalty mistake by Vancouver, scoring a power play goal with 2 mins left. With the goalie (Carter Hart) pulled for an extra attacker, Claude Giroux went top shelf to tie the game and force overtime play.

After a scoreless 3-on-3 OT period, the Canucks’ Elias Pettersson and J.T. Miller scored the winning shootout goals, as the Flyers’ Sean Couturier and Giroux could not get the puck on target and past Thatcher Demko.

Next up for the Flyers is the Seattle Kraken back at the Wells Fargo Center.
