Saturday kicked off the first Radio 104.5 Summer Block Party of the 2011 season. Fans gathered on this overcast Saturday afternoon for the free, all ages show at the Piazza at Schmidts in Northern Liberties.
Pennsylvania’s own “Find Vienna” was the first band to play, followed by “She Wants Revenge”. The duo performed older songs like “Tear You Apart” and “These Things”, as well as some of their new songs from their recently released album “Valleyheart”.
Soon enough it was time for the main act, Chicago based “Company of Thieves”. We spoke with band members Genevieve Schatz and Marcin Sulewski a few weeks ago when we heard they were heading to Philly for this show. You can check out that interview here.
The band, as a whole, put on a great show, lead by their spunky lead singer (Schatz), who did a interesting job of embracing the audience with a powerful, fun performance. The crowded Piazza got a mix of songs from their first album and newly released second album “Running from a Gamble”. This included a great version of their new single “Death of Communcation”, which they played before graciously thanking fans and leaving the stage. Of course the crowd was hungry for more, and brought the band back, chanting “one more song”.
Moments later the band returned and gave the audience more than they hoped for, playing two more songs, including their biggest hit “Oscar Wilde”. Company of Thieves put on a fantastic live show, including compelling music and a strong interaction with the crowd, that left us wanting more.
By the time they left the stage for good, the sun was shining on Philadelphia once again.
The next Summer Block Party will be headlined by “Young The Giant”.
