Bright Eyes Ignite Philly with Music, Activism, and Five Dice, All Threes

April 19th, 2025 – Bright Eyes took the stage at The Met in Philadelphia to a packed house and kicked off the night with “Bells and Whistles,” the high-energy opener from their newest album Five Dice, All Threes. It was the perfect way to launch a brilliant 23-song set from a band that’s long cemented its place as one of indie rock’s most iconic acts.

They were completely brilliant, bringing additional depth to the night’s performance and delivering a show that felt both timely and timeless. It’s been almost three years since I last covered Oberst and the band, and it was clear they’ve lost none of their edge.

The band’s high energy on stage was matched by the crowd, rocking along throughout the performance. The band was tight, and everyone in the audience could see how much they love playing together. Oberst was in full control of what was going on, clearly enjoying himself with a spring in his step and a look of newfound energy.

Bright Eyes are riding high these days. Premiering their latest triumphant album Five Dice, All Threes, the band has been packing houses throughout the tour. They’ve found a dedicated, passionate following that’s stuck with them for decades—and showed up in force for their Philly stop.

Formed in 1997 by Conor Oberst, Bright Eyes have been a constant presence in the indie-rock scene. They’re like the turning of the seasons—always changing, yet incredibly dependable in delivering great music that’s made people fall in love with them over the past couple of decades.

The setlist was a wonderful balance of proven favorites woven with new tracks. The songs were diverse, and after decades together, Oberst, Mike Mogis, and Nate Walcott still appear to be at the top of their game—blending genres and pulling surprises.

During the show, Oberst also highlighted the Poison Oak Project, which launched in 2025 to raise money for local LGBTQ+ advocacy in every city they play. The project focuses especially on supporting the trans community. Bright Eyes are asking people to join them in demanding equality for trans individuals and an end to trans bigotry.

Toward the end of the set, the band added a few more songs from Five Dice, All Threes and closed with a three-song encore.
