Loomis & The Lust

Loomis & The Lust

With hits like “A.D.D.” and “Bright Red Chords” Loomis & The Lust are quickly becoming a national sensation. In fact, they were named one of the “Top 25 New Bands in the World” by MTV Iggy.

The band was formed by front man and songwriter Will Loomis along with bassist Noah Babcock in 2009. Anthony Sonetti, an award winning drummer from Musician’s Institute in LA soon joined, along with his friend Mike Dapra on lead guitar.

"Space Camp"

Their second EP  “Space Camp” was released earlier this month (available on Itunes) and as they gear up for a west coast swing that kicks off on September 2nd, Will Loomis & his bandmates (all of them jokesters) took time out to answer some revealing questions for Independent Philly.

Independent Philly: What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs?
Loomis & The Lust: WELL… I’ll tell you what they’re not about. They’re definitely not about ex girlfriends. Or clowns, butterflies and rainbows.

IP: Who are your musical influences?
LL: Led Zeppelin, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Cars, The Clash, Johnny Cash

IP: How did you come up with the name of the band?
LL: It’s Will’s last name with a fun alliteration. It’s nothing serious and nothing to write home about. We started out as just “Loomis” but there were already three bands called Loomis.

Loomis & The Lust

IP: What has been your biggest challenge thus far as a band?
LL: Sharing bathrooms and being on time… to anything.

IP: What is the funniest or most embarrassing story you have from the road?
LL: Will being mistaken for a fugitive then getting tackled at gun point by SWAT members… naked. They busted into the hotel room and handcuffed him while he was just stepping out of the shower. Will was pissed until he saw the photo. The guy looked just like him!

IP: How long have you known each other? How did you meet?
LL: We were all dating the same girl at the same time in a dream that Michael J. Fox had 20 some odd years ago.

IP: If you weren’t musicians what would you be?
LL: Employed.

Band on the Rise

IP: Most of your shows are California based, when could we expect you in Philadelphia?
LL: We are hoping to play in both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh in October on our way to CMJ.

IP: What music is on your ipod?
LL: ‘Dance Commander’ by Electric Six, The Tetris theme song.

IP: What image do you think your music conveys?
LL: Probably something that Picasso drew in his early years? All of our music is danceable. We hope it conveys a sense of fun.

IP: Are you looking for an independent label deal or a major label deal?
LL: At the moment we aren’t looking. We are definitely a DIY band.

IP: Describe the first time you heard your music on the radio.
LL: When you grow up listening to a station and thinking that all the bands on the radio are so big, and living a certain lifestyle, it becomes a very romanticized idea. We were insanely pumped. Reference that scene in That Thing You Do…minus the appliance store, and that was us!

At Home on the West Coast

IP: What was your biggest ‘rock star’ moment to date?
LL: Winning the Ourstate/New Music Seminar $25,000 award for “Artist on the Verge” in Hollywood in front of a packed house at the Henry Fonda Theatre. It was a landslide popular vote, Accepting that award and the prize package was pretty damn rockstar.

IP: What is the must-have item on your tour bus?
LL: Does a woman count as an item?

IP: Which band are you dying to tour with?
LL: Weird AL

IP: What was your most memorable show?
LL: The Evil Kneivel Festival in Butte, Montana.

IP: Tell us something about yourselves that would surprise our readers.
LL: We have a pet turtle named Mitch Connor. When someone asks us a question and we don’t know how to answer it we often say we have to check with Mitch.

We can’t get enough of these catchy tunes and we hope to see Loomis & The Lust roll into Philly in October so we can check out their live show and get their unique perspective on the city of independence. In the meantime…hey look! That dog has a poofy tail! Wait, what were we talking about?
