Insane Clown Posse at The Electric Factory

We had no idea what we were in store for on Sunday, October 5th. All we knew was that we were going to be covering the Insane Clown Posse show at the Electric Factory. The extent of knowledge we had in regards to the Insane Clown Posse was nothing more than the occasional TV or internet clip featuring the group and their fans (referred to as “Juggalos”). We were aware however that, true to their name, their shows are known to get a bit insane. Walking into the venue we were worried that we might suffer bodily harm, or at least come out with a shattered camera lens, but the night was anything but that dangerous.

Once inside the Electric Factory, not having our faces painted quickly put us in the minority. The Insane Clown Posse (ICP) took the stage around 1130pm and came out to the crowd chanting “FAMILY, FAMILY, FAMILY”.

Before entering the photo pit we noticed that the security guards in front all had ponchos on. A friend had warned us that ICP douses the crowd with soda throughout their performances, but we had assumed that they were kidding. You know what they say about assumptions. As I pulled a poncho out of my camera bag, deciding whether or not to put it on, a security guard gave me a thumbs up and clearly, that was the right decision. Within 2 minutes of ICP taking the stage Soda (the Faygo variety) was being poured on the crowd – somehow my camera survived.

ICP’s performance was one of the most memorable concerts we’ve been to in a long time. Between the theatrics, the Faygo showers, confetti, and old school rapping, it was a blast. The perception of Juggalos as hardcore nuts is quite far off. Yes there were mosh pits, yes they had their faces painted like clowns, but at the end of the day, the Juggalos are a community just trying to have fun in a judgement-free environment.

If you’ve ever felt intimated by attending an ICP show, don’t be. The scene is all about acceptance – so go paint your face and get ready for a Faygo shower – Whoop Whoop!
