VILLANOVA, Pa. – Georgetown (#2 seed) defeated #1 seed Denver, 8-3, at Villanova Stadium to win the 2018 BIG EAST Men’s Lacrosse Championship. It is the Hoyas’ first BIG EAST men’s lacrosse championship title.
Georgetown (12-4) led the entire game, and held Denver scoreless until almost 28 minutes into the contest. Hoya sophomore Jake Carraway scored three of the first four Georgetown goals of the game, and Lucas Wittenberg led the Hoyas with three goals and two assists. Denver’s Colin Rutan scored all three of the Pioneer goals.
Georgetown senior goalkeeper Nick Marrocco won the Championship Most Outstanding Player honors, making 14 saves in the title game, 26 for the weekend. And Georgetown’s tight defense held the high-powered Pioneer offense to Denver’s lowest since their lost 12-3 against Virginia in 2003.
Georgetown beat Villanova(#3 seed) 13-10 in the semifinals. With the win against Denver, Georgetown earned the BIG EAST’s automatic bid into the 2018 NCAA Championship.
